Aesop Rock has teamed up with Homeboy Sandman to release ‘Lice’. The five track EP features production from Dj Spinna, Optiks, Blockhead and Alex ‘Apex’ Gale as well as some awesome artwork from long-time Aesop Rock collaborator Jeremy Fish. The Ep is available for free download via Stones Throw Records HERE, with a small amount of physical copies being pressed for some U.S. tour dates in December.
Aesop Rock is on fine form throughout, spitting absolutely great bars on every track. I'm not a huge fan of Homeboy Sandman, and I find him to be hit and miss on this EP. The production is just what you would expect from a ‘backpack rap’ or Stones Throw release, slightly leftfield and weird, yet it is not predictable or redundant, and all the tracks nod along nicely. I especially appreciated the beat for closing track ‘Get A Dog’, which chops up Linkin Park's ‘One Step Closer’ of all things to form the main spine. An ingenious feat and I'm sure you will agree that the EP is worth a download just to hear that beat. All five tracks are great, but my personal favourite is the centre piece ‘Environmental Studies’ which comprises a beat from a series of hypnotic, sampled loops including a piano, double bass/cello, brushed drums and electric guitar, all while both rappers deliver consecutively killer verses and Aesop Rock ties everything up in a bow with a fantastic hook. Check the EP out below, and if you like it you can cop a guilt free download from the link above!
