Boston based prophetic rapper Mr. Lif is set to make his return to Hip Hop with brand new album ‘Don't Look Down’, which is set to drop via Mello Music Group on April 15th. This is his first album in 7 years, and perhaps as expected for someone who has been absent from 'the game' for a length of time, this album is some of the rappers most personal and introspective work. Mello Muisc's press release for the album boasts “A chronicle of personal evolution, internal strength, and the ebbs and flows of life… a record borne from successes, failures, and hard learned lessons”
At fist glance, many of the elements of what made Mr. Lif one of conscious Hip Hop's leading lights remain intact; the beats are still thick, soupy and head noddingly infectious. The guest list is still a who's who of the underground, with verses from his old team mates The Perceptionists, Blacastan and Del The Funky Homosapien. And Mr. Lif's own trademark drawl is still as thick and brilliant as it was on ‘Enter The Colossus’. However the production and verses that we have heard so far sound altogether sunnier, brighter, less paranoid. Even if the lyrical content may deal with his inner demons and struggles, there is definitely an optimistic, hopeful vibe running throughout the album. Just in time for the Summer months :)
Our favourite track from the project so far is ‘Whizdom’. The beat has a very dub orientated undertone, with crackly production and echoing effects throughout. This provides a perfect backdrop for Mr. Lif to deliver a lesson in how to effortlessly flow over an instrumental. Plus Blacastan rides out the beat to the very end with a great guest verse. Check it out below.
